In an age when travel perks seem few and far between, the stopover remains one of the best deals in air travel, and one that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.
Most of the time, we think of layovers as an inconvenience, but when done right, stopovers can be a fun and affordable way to check out a new destination.
Many airlines offer extended layovers that let you spend a day or more in a hub city without paying extra airfare. In some cases, they even offer free (or discounted) hotel stays, airport transfers, and guided tours.
In my case, a three-night stopover in Hong Kong on the way back from Singapore confirmed what I had already expected: that Hong Kong would definitely be worth returning to for a longer visit.
While my stopover was a DIY operation, many airlines make it pretty seamless to build in extra time on either end of your journey.
Turkish Airlines
Turkish Airlines’ “Stopover in Istanbul” program is a generous one. If you’re connecting internationally through the city and have a layover of at least 20 hours, you’re eligible for a free hotel stay.
Economy passengers get one night in a four-star hotel, and business class travelers get two nights in a five-star or boutique hotel.
You need to request the hotel stay at least 72 hours in advance and book flights with a stopover in mind. Most nationalities (including U.S.) can enter Turkey visa-free or with an easy online e-visa.
Why stopover in Istanbul?
With its rich history, vibrant street life, and iconic skyline straddling two continents, even a short visit to Istanbul offers a taste of something unforgettable.
Whether you’re wandering through the Grand Bazaar, sipping a cocktail by the Bosphorus, snacking on simit, or admiring the Hagia Sophia, a stopover in Istanbul will likely inspire a return visit.
Qatar Airways
Through a partnership with Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways lets you add a stop in Doha for one to four nights, with some very affordable hotel packages included.
One night at a four-star hotel starts at just $14, while one night at a five-star property will set you back $24. They also offer stays at beach hotels, which include access to Doha Sands Beach (starting at $31 for one night).
Stopover bookings need to be made at least three days before your date of travel.
Travelers from the U.S. and many other countries don’t need a visa to enter Qatar, provided you’re staying fewer than 30 days.
Why stopover in Doha?
Doha’s compact size makes it easy to explore in a short window, whether you’re there for 24 hours or a long weekend.
Visit the stunning National Museum of Qatar or the I.M. Pei–designed Museum of Islamic Art, wander the labyrinthine alleys of Souq Waqif, or take a desert safari just outside the city.
And since Qatar Airways flies to more than 160 destinations worldwide, it’s an ideal halfway point if you’re headed to Africa, Southeast Asia, or Australia.
Icelandair
If you’re flying between North America and Europe, Icelandair lets you add up to seven days in Iceland with no extra airfare required.
While the airline doesn’t throw in free hotels, it does offer a lot of detailed suggestions on what to see and do while you’re there, including quirky videos on their website courtesy of local photographer Ása Steinars, showcasing itineraries that make the most of 24, 48, or 72 hours in Iceland.
U.S. passport holders don’t need a visa for stays under 90 days.
Why stopover in Reykjavik?
Whether this is your first time in Iceland or you’ve been visiting for years, there is always something new to see and do (or favorite activities to return to).
Even with a short stopover, you can soak in the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, explore Reykjavik’s compact downtown, or rent a car for a quick drive to see geysers and waterfalls.
If you have more time, do a Golden Circle loop or hike a lava field. Iceland’s rugged beauty is on full display at every turn.
It’s not the cheapest place, but for a taste of Icelandic nature and culture, it’s worth the detour.
Etihad Airways
Etihad makes it easy to spend a couple of days in Abu Dhabi thanks to a stopover program that includes a hotel stay of up to two nights.
You’ll need a return flight booked connecting in Abu Dhabi to take advantage of the deal.
Once your flight is booked, enter your booking reference number and last name on the Etihad stopover website to check hotel availability and choose your preferred stay. Then you’ll get a voucher you can provide at check-in.
U.S. passport holders can enter the UAE visa-free for up to 30 days.
Why stopover in Abu Dhabi?
Once you’re in Abu Dhabi, visit the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, stroll along the Corniche (a lovely five miles of manicured waterfront), or see some art at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
If you’ve got time and energy, head out to the Empty Quarter desert to explore the epic dunes.
The vibe in Abu Dhabi is modern with a strong undercurrent of tradition, and for a jetlag reset, it’s an optimal choice.
Copa Airlines
Copa Airlines offers a stopover program that lets you add up to seven days in Panama City.
There’s no free hotel, but the stopover website highlights discounts for hotels, restaurants, and activities.
You’ll just need to present your travel reservation confirmation or the stopover voucher email, along with identification, to take advantage of the deals.
For U.S. travelers, no visa is needed for short stays. And Tocumen International Airport is close to downtown, so you can be at your hotel in under 30 minutes.
Why stopover in Panama City?
Panama City is brimming with culture, history, and cosmopolitan energy, not to mention a lot to see and do.
Check out the Panama Canal at the Miraflores Locks, soak up the old-world charm of Casco Viejo, relax in Metropolitan Natural Park (essentially a wildlife preserve right in the middle of the city), or zip-line in the nearby rainforest.
There’s also great coffee, rooftop cocktails, and plenty of ceviche on offer.
Iberia Airlines
Flying Iberia? You can add a stopover in Madrid for up to nine nights with their Stopover Hola Madrid program.
While no free accommodations are offered, Iberia partners with local hotels, restaurants, museums, and tour operators to offer discounts you can stack into a fun, affordable mini-trip.
Simply select a route that includes a stop in Madrid, choose your desired number of nights, and then make your booking.
Spain is part of the Schengen zone, so most travelers from the U.S. can enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
Why stop in Madrid?
Madrid is an easily walkable city that’s always full of energy, so finding something to do won’t be difficult.
Make time for a traditional flamenco show, go on a tapas crawl and snack on some of the city’s best bites (Calle Cava Baja is a good street to start on), get lost in El Retiro park, or take in some artistic masterpieces at The Prado.
If you have extra time, hop on a high-speed train to Toledo or Segovia to explore a bit further afield.
Emirates
If you’re flying with Emirates, you have the option of booking a stopover in Dubai, with discounted hotel packages and experiences available.
If you happen to be “stuck” in the city due to a long layover beyond your control, the airline also offers a very generous Dubai Connect service, which includes a free hotel, airport transfers, and meals.
To qualify, your stopover time needs to be between eight and 26 hours for economy or premium economy, and between six and 26 hours for first or business class (as long as there are no better connection times to choose from for your itinerary).
Travelers from the U.S. can enter visa-free, but always double-check before flying.
Why stopover in Dubai?
Once in Dubai, the list of things to do is a long one.
Visit the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, step back in time by exploring the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (while you’re there, take a traditional boat ride on Dubai Creek), or venture into the desert for a 4×4 dune safari.
It may feel like a flashy city, but it also has hidden corners, delicious food, and a surprisingly robust beach scene.
Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines makes it easy to explore the city-state up to seven days, thanks to its Singapore Stopover Holiday program, including a choice of discounted hotels.
Singapore makes an ideal stopover destination thanks to its inherent efficiency and small size, and no matter where your travel interests lie (from food to culture to adventure), you’ll find a good fit there.
Travelers from the U.S. don’t need a visa for short visits.
Why stopover in Singapore?
Even a day or two in Singapore gives you a good sense of everything it has to offer.
Eat your way around the world at a hawker center, stroll through Chinatown and Little India (stopping for street snacks along the way), visit the UNESCO-listed Singapore Botanic Gardens, hike a nature trail, or visit one of Singapore’s offshore islands, time permitting.
The city is immaculately clean and easy to navigate, making it ideal for squeezing in sightseeing between long-haul legs.
TAP Air Portugal
TAP’s stopover program gives you the chance to spend up to 10 days in Lisbon or Porto without paying extra on airfare.
You can add a stopover when booking your flight, and while the airline doesn’t provide a free hotel stay, you get access to tons of discounts on accommodations, restaurants, and local experiences.
Plus, there’s a 25% discount on any domestic flight during the stopover period.
Travelers from the U.S. can enter Portugal visa-free for stays under 90 days.
Why stopover in Lisbon/Porto?
In Lisbon, you can easily get lost among winding streets packed with charm, stopping to take in the views from hilltop miradouros (lookout points) in between tram rides, shopping for local ceramics, and snacking on sweet and custardy pastel de nata.
In Porto, sip port by the river, take a boat cruise on the Douro, or admire the tiled São Bento train station.
Both cities are walkable, photogenic, and rich in history without feeling like museums.
Oman Airways
You can book a free stopover of up to three nights in Oman’s capital of Muscat.
No hotel is included, but you can take advantage of discounted rates at hotels that usually include breakfast and taxes.
Single-entry visas, valid for one month, are issued on arrival at Muscat International Airport for travelers from the U.S.
Why stopover in Muscat?
Whether you’re stopping for one night or three, Muscat will keep you busy.
Wander through the vibrant Mutrah Souq and shop for souvenirs, visit the historic Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts, take a scenic boat tour along the coast, and spend some time at Qurum Beach.
And if there’s time, you can also take a day trip to the desert.
