How To Choose a Business Travel Credit Card

A good business travel card can help earn you a huge stack of travel rewards and make travel much less stressful.

But before you choose one, you want to make sure you’re getting the right card for your business needs and travel habits. For example, a hotel-branded card won’t work if you’re not loyal to one hotel chain, and a high-fee card won’t be worth the cost if you’re not making use of all the benefits.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing a business travel credit card:

  • Annual fee: Make sure the perks are worth the annual fee — but also don’t be afraid of a high fee if you can get more value out of the card.
  • Rewards rate: Look for category bonuses for spending in areas you already spend on for your business.
  • APR: While it’s always a good idea to pay your credit card in full every month, make sure the APR (annual percentage rate) isn’t going to lead you into debt. Some business credit cards offer promotional APRs, which can help with business startup costs.
  • Welcome offer: The welcome bonus on your business credit card can be worth (literally) thousands of dollars. But make sure you can realistically make the minimum spend requirement.
  • Redemption options: While some credit cards only earn one type of miles or points, some offer flexible rewards that can be redeemed in multiple ways. Find a card that matches how you want to redeem and gives you the most value.
  • Additional perks. Finding a card with built-in business tools (like cash flow and employee card tracking) can help simplify your operations. Also look for extras like purchase protection, extended warranty, travel insurance, and elite status.

Bottom Line: Should You Get a Business Travel Card?

Getting the right business credit card can help you earn (nearly) free flights and hotel stays for spending money on things you already buy for your business, while also helping you run your business smoothly with built-in tracking tools and employee cards.

You can also upgrade your travel with perks like lounge access, elite status, seat upgrades, car rental upgrades, and travel credits.

But it’s up to you to manage your money and keep up on your monthly payments on your business credit card — it’s not worth getting into debt for travel rewards.

No, you don’t need to be a registered business or even have an Employee Identification Number (EIN) to qualify for a business credit card.

You just need to provide your business income and the type of business you run. This can include side hustles (like flipping garage sale items on eBay) or other small businesses that don’t take a lot of your time.

Yes, most business credit cards require that you provide your Social Security number and will perform a hard credit pull on your personal credit to qualify.

This can cause your score to dip slightly, but if you make on-time payments and keep your debt loads low, your score should recover.

In most cases, you can combine your points between your business and personal credit cards from the same card issuer.

For example, Chase allows you to combine your Ultimate Rewards® earned from both business and personal credit cards. American Express Membership Rewards® can also be combined.

You’ll usually need to contact your card issuer and ask them to combine your accounts manually.
